Future Focus

Even if a child is only a witness to abusive behavior, emotional trauma has taken place...

Domestic Violence has been a reality since the beginning of time...

Title of website:  The Silent Witness National Initiative

URL of website:  http://www.silentwitness.net/

Score:  4

Annotation:  The Silent Witness National Initiative provides a glimpse of domestic violence and the powerful impact that this act has on the child, the family and society while focusing particularly on the women who died at the hands of a loved one.  One poem within this site describes the terror that a child experienced while she watched her mother be murdered by her father.  The Mission expressed is to “Promote peace, healing and responsibility in adult relationships in order to eliminate domestic murders in the United States by the year 2010 while the vision is to “Promote successful community-based domestic violence reduction efforts in order to reach zero domestic murders by 2010.”  A very outcome-focused organization, The Silent Witness National Initiative reminds us through red silhouettes of women who have died that domestic violence can and must be stopped.

Title of website:  The National Center for Victims of Crime

URL of website:  http://www.ncvc.org/ncvc/Main.aspx

Score:  4

Annotation:  The National Center for Victims of Crime provides this website as an educational resource for the general population.  There is a resource library available with a wealth of information.  Unique to this site is another important link, the Stalking Resource Center.  Stalking can affect children and adults, men and women.  State Stalking laws are addressed at this site and an 18 minute video is provided as a training tool for Police Officers, but anyone can benefit from this material.  It is critical to realize that often when adults are being stalked, children are being forced to relocate and live in fear as well.  “Stalking is a lethal crime. It affects more than one million women and nearly 400,000 men in America each year. Tragically, seventy-six percent of female homicide victims were also stalked in the year prior to their murder. More than half of these victims reported the stalking to police before being murdered. It is the hope of Peggy Klinke’s family that this tape will give officers the information and tools they need to effectively intervene in stalking cases.”
